Occupy Protesters have clearly stated their demands

The #Occupy movement has frequently been accused, in media coverage, of not having a clearly articulated demand for the outcome of the protests.

This can not be further from the truth.  The Occupy movement’s emergence is recent but its demands for justice are due to years of repression and rigging of the entire system.

Occupy committees have decelerations, there are crowd source lists and one finds that the demands are populace, articulate, reasonable and actionable.

Here is the list - You can share it, suggest new demands and participate in building a research to fight mis-information

Political Prisoners in Iran

Political prisoners pay a heavy price.  They often have the courage to stand up to what is right, fighting for change and shedding light on injustice and human rights abuses.

Once incarcerated their only hope is the help of the outside world.  It is important to know about their plight and do what we can to make sure they are not forgotten and supported.  Bookmark this link to stay up to date with the latest developments in Iran

Questions for the Republican Candidates

  • When your oath of office is in direct conflict with the Ten Commandments, as when “Thou Shalt Not Kill” contradicts our current war policy, which commitment will you keep?

Curation the whole story!

The entire curation story can be explained with this picture:

Information Overflow (Left Image) - The reasons for curation are multiple and the image on the left characterize the problem perfectly and as follows:

  • Information is growing at warp speed
  • Information flow piles up so fast that finding the right information is a big challenge
  • Human capacity to deal with so much information is at its limit.

Multiple Sources (Middle Image) - The number of information sources and the format of how information is delivered is growing rapidly.  Curators should be able to easily integrate information from different sources in one place.

Curation (Right Image) - Curation is all about creating relevance around organization.  The curator is someone that uses multiple source (middle image) to search for information, organize it and share it in a user friendly and accessible way!

It is easy to see that the more time a curator spends in organizing and categorizing the curated information the more value they provide for their users.  The organization of information provides a number of benefits as follows

  • Makes it easy for users to find information
  • Since curation is topic based, other information in the group helps educate visitors to learn about related subjects
  • Organization makes it easy to package and share subset of the information with others (Content Strategy)
  • Thought Leadership - If someone walks into your library and sees the depth and breath of your research they are inclined to be impressed!

Curation has many applications, improved search, social media communication, online marketing and story telling are the most common uses of this new and disruptive class of technology solutions.  Here is my curated page on the topic of curation (Discussions, tools), social media marketing (Discussions, tips, strategy, tools) and search (search engines, articles related to search).

Thought leadership and curation

Will walking into someone’s library and looking at what they read impress you, or at least compel you to want to listen and see what this person has to say?

My friend and teacher of 17 years, Roger Weir has a personal library of 80,000 books (was about 60,000 when I first met him).  When I started going to his Saturday lectures back in 1994, he used to hold them at his house in Los Angeles.  The entire two bedroom house was a library.  I once asked him if he had read all the books, he said he can index them!  I stayed to learn from him every staurdary for about 12 years.  The reason was of course his knowledge and presentation skills, but I also knew what informed him and that helped too.

I always felt fortunate to be able to attend these classes and listen to Roger distill the wisdom of the ages in 90 minute lectures.  The fruit of years of study shared!  Roger is an educator and a thought leader.

KBucket’s curated pages have the same effect.  A KAuthor, will read and tag (index) each link to identify the content of that article.  This makes it easier for all users to discover valuable content from trusted sources and learn more about topics.  Here is an example of a KBucket page, curated over months, organized and re-organized for easy access - and the work is never ending - Notice that the constant evolution of curated pages is a reason for users to use the page as a reference which means frequent visits.  The dream of all marketers.

Content Curation is Disruptive!

You often hear people say that Content Curation is a disruptive business, but what does that really mean?

Curation is a new layer of activity that sits between the content creators and the consumer, in essence disrupting the original flow of information, providing tools that empower a mass of users to manage the context of information.

Curation is an entirely new activity with 3 distinct phases of operation.

  1. Searching & Finding
    1. Listening tools, source monitoring and quick navigation of multiple sources are of primal importance in this stage.
    2. Crowd-sourcing features improve the quality of the end product
  2. Organizing
    1. The number of groups, meta data filtering (taxonomy) and the purpose for selecting the tags (ontology) matter
    2. Systems that provision for crowd input and easy editing of the taxonomy will produce superior results.
  3. Sharing
    1. Context matters here.  Curation is all about context, which means making it easier for users to find a wealth of related  information on a topic.
    2. Navigation matters - How easy is it to go between related topics without losing your place.
    3. Modules and plug-ins matter - the ability to take all or part of your curated content and share it on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or package it and share it on Mobile apps provide added benefits.

Just like blogging platforms provided Content Management Systems that empowered a generation of users to become content creators, Curation will empower a generation of users to become context editors.

This is significant and a power shift.  Today media channels and blogs control the context of the information they create and share.  With Content Curation a larger group of users will be empowered to manage the context of information shared.  The benefits of this new and disruptive activity are explosive.
